Frequently Asked DENVER Dog TrainER Questions

What type of training do you offer?

Dog trainers should be positive, fun folks, making the training experience great for dogs and humans. I take a balanced approach that blends many strategies and techniques. My goal is for you and your dog to enjoy the training process.

How much time should my puppy spend in their crate/kennel each day?

Puppies should be supervised at all times. If you’re not able to supervise your puppy, then they should be in their crate. This prevents them from developing unwanted behaviors and allows you to nurture wanted behaviors.

I’m not sure I want to use a crate for my dog. Why do you recommend it?

A crate is the fastest and most effective way to housebreak young dogs, but for any dog it is a fantastic management tool. It’s used to create habits and structure to help prevent unwanted behaviors. It’s also a place where dogs can feel safe and secure.

My dog knows commands, but doesn’t respond when I use them. What’s going on?

If you dog has what I refer to as “selective hearing,” they may have become used to ignoring you. Commands need to be enforced every time.

Is it a bad idea to let my dog sleep in my bed or get up on my furniture?

Your dog needs to understand rules, boundaries and limitations. If your dog’s default is to jump on your bed whenever they feel like it, they’re getting the message that they run the place. Your dog can come up onto your bed or furniture — with permission. In fact, your dog should be getting permission do to pretty much everything. You’re in charge here. Dogs thrive in an environment that has clear rules and boundaries. Unwanted behaviors develop and are unwittingly nurtured by giving your dog too much freedom.
